Finally, she rolled into the car park of the service station at precisely eight minutes past twelve. She ran through the main building ignoring all the coffee and cakes that were on sale and made for the business suite.

She arrived and slowed down slightly. She felt hot and sweaty and knew that she looked a mess. Since her stay in hospital she had lost some fitness. As her steps slowed she tried to get her breath back before she went in. She was aware of her finger throbbing as she passionately cursed Detective Inspector Kevin Slater under her breath. She knew this was typical of his kind of tricks.

She ran a hand through her hair. Should she nip into the ladies and try to touch up her make-up and run a brush through her hair? Or was it not worth the extra time? She decided that if she was going to be late, she might as well look like she cared enough to rush and not stop to fix her make-up.

She walked into the meeting with her head held high. Two people were sat behind a desk, chatting quietly to each other. The entire meeting room exuded blandness from its royal blue carpet to its light ash and chrome furniture and suspended ceiling. She took a second to assess her two fellow officers. There was a man and a woman, both looked to be in their thirties. He looked a bit hipster with round-rimmed glasses and slightly too long hair swept over in a side parting.

She had long dark hair in a plait, and a round face. They both stopped and looked up. The woman was the first to speak, 'You must be DC Angel, we've been waiting for you.'

'Yes, I'm Emma Angel. Sorry I'm late, I only got the meeting request an hour ago. My boss must've forgotten to send it.' She had no qualms about throwing Kev Slater under the bus after the morning he'd put her through.

'I'm DS Cath Harris and this is DC John Farthing.'

They sat down and got settled, sorting out coffee and making small talk.

'So,' Cath said, 'we're here to talk about putting a UC into King Kabs, to see if there's any truth in the rumours that they've been involved in the drug trade.'

Emma nodded. 'Yes. Have you heard the rumours about how they were involved with our CID?' She decided not to pussyfoot around the subject.

'We did hear the rumours. That some of the senior officers got too close to the owner, Billy King.' She frowned at John who nodded to confirm that she'd got the name right. 'But King is dead and we've had no real inquiry into what happened. I mean, I know there was a slew of resignations, but we haven't seen anything formal.'

'No,' Emma said. 'And it's likely that you won't either. The only senior officer who survived the chaos sustained a head injury and his testimony wouldn't be reliable even if he did give it.' She paused. 'Anyway, they did arrest and charge DI Hargreaves and they've started with a practically new team.
